Boost in Reading

*Group enrollment is now open*

Boost in Reading will be based on the Orton Gillingham approach, Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program for Reading, Spelling, and Speech(LiPS), and Visualizing and Verbalizing Programs.

The Orton Gillingham approach sees the child as an individual, using a multi-sensory approach, breaks down reading into smaller skills, and is designed to be flexible for implementation.  The contribution of the LiPS® Program is the development of an oral-motor, visual, and auditory feedback system that enables all students to prove the identity, number, and order of phonemes in syllables and words.  The Visualizing and Verbalizing® (V/V®) program develops concept imagery—the ability to create an imagined or imaged gestalt from language—as a basis for comprehension and higher order thinking. The development of concept imagery improves reading and listening comprehension, memory, oral vocabulary, critical thinking, and writing.

Whether your child has been identified with dyslexia, identified as a struggling reader/speller, reading or listening comprehension, behind peers, or just needs a boost this group will be perfect for your child.  Each lesson will be based on the tutor’s diagnostic notes from previous lessons about student errors.

  • Group will be run by an Associate-in-training with the Orton Gillingham Academy

  • What’s included in the group?  Screening if not already seen by a therapist (place in appropriate group), 1 day a week for 6 weeks, end of session zoom (progress and suggestions).

Ukulele Group

*Group enrollment is now open*

Welcome to the world of Ukulele!

We are thrilled to invite you and your child to learn more about the world of music through playing the ukulele. Children ages 5 - 10 are encouraged to join in a musical adventure, but must bring their own ukulele! Tips for renting/purchasing one can be provided in advance. Other recommended materials (tuners, case, folder) will be discussed during the first class.

For 9 sessions we will learn the basics of caring for our ukuleles like how to hold, care for, and tune them; how to play them with 4-7 different chords and strum patterns; how to read a basic song sheet to play together as a group add different rhythms; all while working together as a group to make music! Group members will also benefit from non-musical goals like following directions, attending to tasks in a group environment, practicing fine motor skills, and building self-confidence to name a few

Songs selected for the course will partly be selected to teach new chords gradually, and partly based on class interest. Fundamentals of music theory and rhythm will also make their way into our class as it progresses, so don’t miss out!
